2Samuel 23:5 – Truly is not my family thus with God–that He has made an everlasting covenant with me, ordered and secured in all aspects, for all my salvation and all my delight, and will He not indeed bring it to fruition!
Scripture records these Spirit-inspired words of King David as a summary assessment of his life. The Bible extensively chronicles David’s life, so we know that his story included extreme ups and downs–severe trials and stellar triumphs, terrible sin and tremendous faith, ferocious woes and fantastic joys, grievous tragedies and great prosperity. Through it all, “in all aspects”, God was carrying out “His ordered and secured everlasting covenant…for [David’s] utter salvation and perfect delight.” The pleasant, the painful, the commendable, the regrettable, all of it employed by God according to His covenant love and eternal plan toward David and his spiritual household.
So it is with all who by faith in Christ have been adopted into that same spiritual family! Through all of the episodes and seasons, in all aspects of our lives, God is fulfilling His own everlasting covenant for our complete salvation and total delight.
“But how can this be?!, we cry. By the mystery of divine grace and the miracle of Christ’s cross! Ours is but to believe it, to keep on believing it, through everything. To live as if it is true (for it is!), and worship and give thanks.
