Exodus 12:13 – The blood shall be a sign for you, on the houses where you are. And when I see the blood, I will pass over you, and no plague will befall you to destroy you, when I strike the land….
While God spoke this promise to His people in context of the original Passover in Egypt, the fullness of Scripture clearly reveals the symbolism of the Passover as fulfilled in Jesus Christ. He is the true sacrifice lamb whose shed blood shields all who trust in Him from God’s judgment against their sin. The Israelites, sequestered in their houses marked by the blood of the lamb, went through the deadly plague, but the destroyer passed over them, for they were protected from harm (Exodus 12:23).
Even so, we today who by grace alone, through faith alone, in Christ alone, belong to God’s “chosen people” (Deuteronomy 7:6; 1Peter 2:9), are going through this deadly plague striking all the earth, but we need fear no harm. The destruction we deserve under God’s righteous judgment was poured out upon Jesus Christ on the cross, and, in Him, we are eternally protected, safe and secure. Death will come to all of us, and it has and will come to some of us through the coronavirus. But death cannot harm us; it can only deliver us to eternal paradise in the presence of Christ. Financial hardship as a result of this plague may befall many of us, but it cannot harm us. Just as the Lord provided for the Israelites in their forty-year wilderness wanderings, so He promises that, even should we go through an economic wilderness, everything we need “will be added” to us (Matthew 6:33). We will pass through, and arrive safely on the other side of the plague, because, in Christ Jesus, God’s ultimate plague of judgment has passed over us once and for all! Hallelujah!
With whom will you pray and give thanks today that, because of Jesus, you have been passed over, so will safely pass through?
